Washington and Lee Men’s Basketball Takes Care Of Emory & Henry, 78-65, Monday Evening

EMORY, Va. – The Washington and Lee University Men's Basketball Team (7-8, 2-4 ODAC) shot 50.8 percent (32-for-63) from the field Wednesday evening as the Generals defeated the Wasps of Emory & Henry College (3-10, 1-5 ODAC) by a 78-65 score at Bob Johnson Court.

The two squads battled back and forth over the first half of the contest with the largest margin being a six-point advantage by W&L (19-13) at the 11:42 mark. Emory & Henry put up a 9-2 run culminated by a three-pointer by junior guard Stephen Brown (Charleston, S.C.) to go up 23-21 with 8:24 on the clock. The two teams traded baskets for the remainder of the period with the Generals taking a 33-30 lead into the break.

After the intermission, Washington and Lee slowly built its lead, outscoring Emory & Henry, 25-13, over a 9:42 stretch of the second half. The Wasps finished the game on a 10-7 run to trim the margin to 78-65, but were unable to claim their second league win in three days.

Washington and Lee was led by Darren Douglas with 19 points and four rebounds while Andrew Franz had 18 points and three boards. Larry Whitaker registered 12 points and six rebounds off the bench while J.D. Ey posted six points, five rebounds, five blocks and four assists.

As a team, the Generals shot 50.8 percent (32-for-63) for the game, including 54.3 percent (19-for-35) in the second half. W&L also won the battle of the boards, 37-32, and held a 42-30 advantage on points in the paint.

Emory & Henry was paced by senior forward Armando Murrell (Brooklyn, N.Y.) with 17 points as he went eight-for-nine from the field. Junior forward Tyler Mullins (Hazard, Ky.) had 12 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals while Brown and sophomore guard Tyler Driver (Alexandria, Va.) each notched 10 points with Driver adding four rebounds, three assists and two steals.

The Wasps shot 44.4 percent (24-for-54) for the game and hit eight three-pointers, but it wasn't enough. E&H also held a 43-25 advantage in bench points, but suffered from 14 turnovers.

Emory & Henry will travel to Lynchburg College on Wednesday evening for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest with the Hornets. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
