Covenant Men’s Basketball Slips Past Emory & Henry, 62-58, Monday Evening

EMORY, Va. – The Covenant College Men's Basketball Team (12-8) withstood a strong second-half rally by Emory & Henry College (4-16) Monday evening as it went on to win a non-conference battle, 62-58, at Bob Johnson Court.

The two teams battled for the first 7:19 of the game with Covenant taking a 12-11 lead. The Scots put together a 15-6 run later in the half to push their margin to 32-20 with 4:09 to go before the half. A layup with five seconds to go by Emory & Henry freshman guard Myles Turner (Richmond, Va.) made the halftime score 37-26 in favor of Covenant.

E&H came out in the second half scoring six-straight points to cut the lead to five (37-32) and force a timeout. The Scots pushed their advantage back to double digits (53-42) but the Wasps went on a tear and scored eight-straight points to get within three (53-50). Covenant then responded with five points to go up 58-50 and was able to hold off Emory & Henry for the final 2:30 of the contest.

Callum Sears had a game high 18 points for the Scots as he hit four three-pointers. Colton McGriff had 13 points while Sam Bowman recorded 11 points and eight rebounds. As a team, Covenant shot 38.8 percent (19-of-49) from the field but converted on 17-of-24 (70.8%) of their free throw attempts.

Emory & Henry was led by senior center Armando Murrell (Brooklyn, N.Y.) with 13 points and five rebounds. Turner got a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds while junior forward Charles Smith (Fayetteville, N.C.) tallied 10 points and five boards.

The Wasps were 23-of-55 (41.8%) on their field goal attempts but shot a dismal 42.1 percent (8-for-19) from the free throw line.  E&H led the battle of points in the paint, 36-20.

Emory & Henry will return to the court on Wednesday when it travels to face Washington and Lee University at 7:00 p.m., in ODAC play.
