LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee University Men's Basketball Team (11-11, 6-7 ODAC) picked up a 74-44 win over Emory & Henry College (4-17, 2-11 ODAC) Wednesday evening at the Warner Center in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play.
The Generals charged out to a 15-2 lead at the 12:30 mark of the first half. Emory & Henry put together a 10-5 run to close the gap to 20-12, but W&L got back-to-back three pointers to close the half, going into the break, up 33-19.
Emory & Henry got a pair of layups from senior center Armando Murrell (Brooklyn, N.Y.) coming out of the locker room to trim the margin to 33-23 with 18:54 to go. A 7-0 run that the Generals extended to 18-4 put the Wasps down, 51-27. Washington and Lee drew the lead out to 30 (65-35 with 4:46 on the clock) and would lead by as much as 32 down the stretch en route to the 74-44 victory.
W&L was led by Andrew Franz's 27-point performance as he went 11-for-16 from the floor and added seven rebounds. Kevin Gill tallied 19 points with five three-pointers while Javon McDonald notched 12 points on the night. J.D. Ey added four points and led all players with 13 rebounds and four assists.
As a team, the Generals shot 53.7 percent (29-for-54) for the game and hit 15-of-29 (51.7%) of their three-point attempts. Washington and Lee had 21 assists, got 38 points from the bench, and won the battle of the boards, 37-26.
E&H was led by Murrell as he tallied 15 points on seven-for-13 shooting. Freshman guard Myles Turner (Richmond, Va.) had nine points, six boards and three assists while junior forward Tyler Mullins (Hazard, Ky.) and sophomore guard Tyler Driver (Alexandria, Va.) each posted five points.
The Wasps shot just 16-for-52 (30.8%) from the floor and hit only 3-of-14 (21.4%) of their attempts from beyond the arc. E&H forced 13 turnovers, but cold shooting from the field and the stripe (9-for-17) was too much to overcome.
Emory & Henry will return to action on Saturday when it hosts Lynchburg College at Bob Johnson Court. The contest is set for a 4:00 p.m., tipoff and will be the nightcap of a doubleheader with the Wasps' and Hornets' women's teams.
