Guilford Men’s Basketball Defeats Emory & Henry, 73-65, Wednesday Evening

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Guilford College Men's Basketball Team (17-7, 9-6 ODAC) picked up an all-important Old Dominion Athletic Conference win over Emory & Henry College (4-19, 2-13 ODAC) by a 73-65 score Wednesday evening at Ragan-Brown Field House.

Emory & Henry got out to a 9-5 lead at the 16:51 mark thanks in part to a pair of three-pointers by sophomore guard Tyler Driver (Alexandria, Va.). Guilford tied the contest at nine and again at 11, going on a 14-4 for a 25-15 advantage with 8:47 on the clock. The two squads would trade baskets for the remainder of the half, taking a 40-30 lead into the locker room.

After the break, the Quakers used a 14-7 run to start the half to push their advantage to 54-37. E&H cut the deficit to 13 (58-45) but GC pushed it back to 17 with 5:51 remaining (65-48). The Wasps finished the contest on a 17-8 run with another trey from Driver just before the buzzer that trimmed the margin to eight (73-75).

Guilford's Matt McCarthy led all scorers with 25 points and five steals as he hit seven shots from beyond the arc. Will Freeman had 15 points and six boards while Zeb Richardson tallied 10 points and seven rebounds. Josh Pittman recorded 12 points, five assists and three steals as well for the Quakers.

As a team, Guilford shot just 35.7 percent (25-for-70) from the field but forced E&H in to 25 turnovers, scoring 29 points off of the Wasps' miscues. The Quakers also won the battle for second-chance points, 24-9.

Emory & Henry senior center Armando Murrell (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had 17 points and a game-high 10 points to complete the double-double and Driver finished the game with 15 points on four three-pointers and five rebounds to lead the Wasps. Freshman guard Myles Turner (Richmond, Va.) had 12 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals while junior forward Charles Smith (Fayetteville, N.C.) added 10 points of his own.

The Wasps shot 25-of-55 (45.5%) for the game but were hurt by turnovers. E&H led the way in points in the paint, 32-28.

Emory & Henry will return to Bob Johnson Court on Saturday afternoon for its regular season finale. The Wasps will take on the No. 11 Tigers of Hampden-Sydney College at 2:00 p.m.
