No. 11 Hampden-Sydney Men’s Basketball Pulls Away From Emory & Henry, 82-61, Saturday Afternoon

EMORY, Va. – The No. 11 Hampden-Sydney Men's Basketball Team (22-3, 14-2 ODAC) used a strong second half to defeat Emory & Henry College (4-20, 2-14 ODAC), 82-61, Saturday afternoon in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action at Bob Johnson Court. The contest served as Senior Day for Emory & Henry, as the Wasps honored senior center Armando Murrell (Brooklyn, N.Y.) prior to the game.

The two squads battled hard early with the Tigers using an 8-2 run to take a 15-9 lead at the 13:06 mark. E&H responded with a 12-4 scoring spurt covering 5:11 to take a 21-19 lead. Hampden-Sydney pulled ahead again late in the half but Emory & Henry had a 7-0 run to move back ahead before the Tigers hit back to back shots for a 37-34 advantage at the break.

Coming out of the locker room, H-SC scored eight-straight points for a 45-34 lead and never looked back. The Wasps got within eight (50-42) with 15:13 on the clock, but the Tigers put together a 12-1 run to extend their lead to 43-62.  Six-straight points by Hampden-Sydney late added some insurance as the nationally-ranked Tigers went on to win 82-61.

Kodie Critzer led the Tigers with 17 points off the bench, hitting five three-pointers in the game, and added three steals. Khobi Williamson had 14 points and six boards while Harrison George notched a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, chipping in five assists.

Hampden-Sydney shot 46.3 percent (31-for-67) for the game and hit 11-of-23 (47.8%) three-point attempts. H-SC had 36 points in the paint and held a 17-8 advantage on second-chance points.

Murrell led all players with 18 points and seven rebounds, as he shot 7-for-14 from the field and hit four-of-seven free throw attempts, to tie his season high. Freshman guard Myles Turner (Richmond, Va.) had 13 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two assists while junior forward Charles Smith (Fayetteville, N.C.) had 12 points and four boards off the bench.

As a team, E&H shot just 38.9 percent (21-for-54) for the game but hit 15-of-21 (71.4%) of its free throws. The Wasps were forced into 20 turnovers and were outrebounded by a 50-36 margin.

Emory & Henry will await the release of the 2013 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament pairings, later Saturday evening. The Wasps will travel for their first-round game on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
