Emory & Henry Men’s Basketball Rallies To Defeat Huntingdon, 89-73, To Open Season

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. – The Emory & Henry College Men's Basketball Team (1-0) came back from a nine-point halftime deficit en route to defeating Huntingdon College (0-1) by a 89-73 score in the 2013 Berry College Classic at the Steven J. Cage Center. The victory was the first for E&H Head Coach David Willson, who is in his first year at the helm of the Wasps.

Emory & Henry got out to a 7-2 lead at the 17:25 mark of the first half but Huntingdon put together an 11-2 run over the next 2:03 to take a 13-9 advantage. The Wasps would lead by five points on two more occasions in the half but the Hawks used a 14-1 scoring spurt to go up 41-28 with 4:16 on the clock. E&H battled back to close the gap to 49-40 at the break.

The two squads went back-and-forth early in the second period and the Wasps began to chip away at the lead, tying things up at 60 points apiece at the 9:32 mark. Emory & Henry took control from there, and never trailing again and outscoring Huntingdon, 32-13, over the final 11:22 of the game.

E&H shot just 38.2 percent (29-for-76) for the game but scored 24 second chance points thanks to 27 offensive rebounds. The Wasps forced 24 turnovers and scored 34 points off the Hawks' miscues.

Senior guard Malcolm Green (Marshville, N.C.) led all players with 23 points and nine rebounds and added four steals and two assists. Sophomore guard Myles Turner (Richmond, Va.) notched 21 points as he went 13-for-14 from the free throw line and added six boards, five steals and four assists. Senior forward Tyler Mullins (Hazard, Ky.) chipped in 15 points and six rebounds as well for the Wasps.

Huntingdon saw four players reach double figures in scoring as Terry Moorer had 15 points and six rebounds. Jason Varney notched 13 points and three steals while Alex Layson and Dantavius Washington had 12 and 10 points, respectively. The Hawks shot 52.2 percent (24-for-46) for the game but turnovers and a deficit of nine rebounds were their undoing down the stretch.

Emory & Henry will face Covenant College (1-0) on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m., in the final day of the Berry College Classic. The Scots defeated the host Berry Vikings, 72-60, in the final game of Friday's action.
