Emory & Henry Men’s Basketball Downs Covenant, 99-82, Saturday Afternoon

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. – The Emory & Henry College Men's Basketball Team (2-0) scored 62 points in the paint en route to a 99-82 win over Covenant College (1-1) Saturday afternoon in the Berry College Classic. The Wasps shot 62.3 percent (38-for-61) from the field in the game.

The two teams battled back and forth for the first three and half minutes of the game. E&H used a 7-0 run to take a 15-10 lead at the 15:10 mark and over time extended the advantage to 13 points (37-24 with 8:37 remaining). The Scots cut the margin to five with 1:19 on the clock but Wasp senior guard Stephen Brown (Charleston, S.C.) hit a three-pointer with 1:08 to go to make the halftime score 53-45.

Covenant came out of the break with an 8-0 run to go up 54-53 with five of those points coming from Colton McGriff. Emory & Henry then seized the game and scored 25 of the next 28 points to open up a 66-55 advantage and 11:46 left in the game.

The Wasps would lead by as much as 24 points (88-64) down the stretch, but the Scots trimmed the lead to 93-79 with 2:09 on the clock. E&H scored six of the final nine points in the game for the 99-82 win.

The 99 points scored by the Wasps were the most since February 2, 2011 when E&H put up 104 in a 106-104 overtime-loss against Greensboro College.

Brown led all players with 23 points as he hit three three-pointers and added eight rebounds, three assists and five steals, all also game-highs. Senior guard Malcolm Green (Marshville, N.C.) notched 18 points while senior forward Charles Smith (Fayetteville, N.C.) had 17 points. Both Brown and Green went eight-for-11 from the field in the contest.

Sophomore guard Myles Turner (Richmond, Va.) and freshman forward Drew Henry (Sterling, Va.) each chipped in nine points for E&H. The Wasps out-rebounded the Scots, 35-30, and held an 18-10 advantage on fast breaks.

Covenant saw five players reach double figures despite the loss. Bryant Engbers had 16 points while Z. Arima and McGriff notched 13 and 12 points, respectively, while McGriff added seven rebounds. Nate Frierson and Micah Turner each had 10 points in the game as the Scots fell victim to 25 turnovers.

Emory & Henry will travel to face Ferrum College on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m.
