No. 13 Virginia Wesleyan Men’s Basketball Too Much For Emory & Henry, 103-72, Saturday

EMORY, Va. – The No. 13 Virginia Wesleyan College Men's Basketball Team (5-0, 1-0 ODAC) tied its season-high for points scored Saturday as it defeated Emory & Henry College (2-4, 0-1 ODAC) by a 103-72 score at Bob Johnson Court. The Marlins are ranked nationally by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).

The two teams battled through six ties and nine lead changes in the first 7:40 of the game. Emory & Henry used a 6-2 run midway through the spurt to draw the score back after falling down by three points. D.J. Woodmore got the go-ahead basket at the 12:20 mark and the Marlins never looked back, opening up a 12-point lead at halftime (54-42).

Virginia Wesleyan scored eight of the first 10 points coming out of the break and pushed its lead to 23 (74-51) with 13:31 on the clock. The Wasps would trim the margin to 15 with a 7-0 run covering 62 seconds during the middle of the half, but would get no closer as the Marlins reeled off an 11-2 run for a 26-point advantage.

VWC would lead by as much as 34 (102-68) down the stretch, but Emory & Henry scored four of the last five points of the game to make the final score 103-72.

The Marlins were led by Colby Heard with 24 points on 10-for-15 shooting from the field and eight rebounds. Woodmore added 24 points of his own including a trio of three-pointers and three assists while Sedric Nady had 17 points seven assists and four rebounds.

VWC scored 60 points in the paint compared to 42 for E&H and held a 27-10 advantage on points off turnovers. As a team, Virginia Wesleyan shot 50 percent (41-for-82) from the field and hit eight three's while also out-rebounding Emory & Henry by a 45-42 margin.

Senior guard Stephen Brown (Charleston, S.C.) had a team-high 19 points as he hit three shots from beyond the arc and added three rebounds. Senior forward Charles Smith (Fayetteville, N.C.) had 12 points as he went six-for-six from the floor while junior forward Chavis Hamilton (Marion, N.C.) notched a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds.

Emory & Henry shot 43.3 percent (26-for-60) for the game including a 53.1 percent clip during the first half. The Wasps continued to struggle from the free throw line, however, going 16-for-30 (53.3%) and also turned the ball over 21 times.

E&H will remain at home on Tuesday when it hosts local rival Virginia Intermont College. Tipoff between the Wasps and Cobras is set for 7:00 p.m.
