Lees-McRae Men’s Basketball Takes Down Emory & Henry, 78-64, Tuesday Evening

BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College Men's Basketball Team (5-5) defeated visiting Emory & Henry College (2-6) by a 78-64 score Tuesday evening at Williams Gymnasium. The Bobcats are a member of NCAA Division II and the Conference Carolinas.

E&H scored the first points of the game on a jumper in the paint by senior forward Charles Smith (Fayetteville, N.C.), however LMC went on a 10-0 run for a 10-2 lead at the 16:02 mark of the first half. The Wasps trimmed the deficit to 18-11 but the Bobcats then went on a 12-2 run covering 3:25 for a 30-13 lead. After Lees-McRae pushed the advantage to 19 late in the half, Emory & Henry scored six of the final seven points of the half to cut the margin to 39-25 at the half.

The Bobcats opened the second half on a 9-0 run for a 23-point lead (48-25 at the 17:03 mark) but Smith scored five straight points for the Wasps to cut the margin back to 48-30. Lees-McRae led by as much as 28 points (75-47 at the 6:45 mark) but Emory & Henry scored the final 10 points of the game to make the final score 78-64.

Lees-McRae was led by Darryl Bond with 13 points and 10 rebounds as he was five-for-seven from the field. Raul Tutton, Mike Chambers and Josh Gaither each had eight points for the Bobcats while Darius Malbon added seven tallies. As a team, LMC was 25-for-31 (80.6%) from the free throw line including 19-for-21 (90.5%) in the first half.

Freshman guard Marquise Coleman (Norfolk, Va.) had a team-high 11 points while senior forward Tyler Mullins (Hazard, Ky.) added nine points and five rebounds. Smith notched eight points and five rebounds while freshmen Drew Henry (Sterling, Va.) and Alex Jones (Lake Worth, Fla.) put up six points apiece off the bench. Twelve of the 15 players that saw action for E&H put a mark in the scoring column. The Wasps shot just 37.3 percent (22-for-59) for the game and fell victim to 20 turnovers.

Emory & Henry will have eight days off for exams and will host the Cougars of Averett University on Wednesday, December 18 at Bob Johnson Court. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
