Washington and Lee Men’s Basketball Nips Emory & Henry, 58-55, Saturday Afternoon

EMORY, Va. – The Washington and Lee University Men's Basketball Team (5-8, 2-2 ODAC) picked up a 58-55 win over Emory & Henry College (2-11, 0-4 ODAC) at the John Rutledge King Center and Bob Johnson Court Saturday afternoon. The Wasps have dropped 11-straight contests and are still searching for their first win of the year in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play.

W&L got out to a 12-0 run 4:10 into the game and pushed its lead to 17-3 at the 14:38 mark of the first half. Emory & Henry clawed its way back into the contest, trimming the deficit down to three (25-22) before the Generals took a 31-27 lead into the break.

The Wasps came out of the locker room and went on a 10-2 run, taking a 37-33 lead with 13:47 left to play. The two squads battled back and forth for the remainder of the game, as the final 16:00 featured four ties and eight lead changes. Neither team led by more than four points in the second half.

E&H went up by two with 2:59 to go on a three-pointer by sophomore guard Kevin Anzenberger (Concord, N.C.), but W&L closed the game with five straight to claim the 58-55 victory. The Wasps had the ball for the final possession, but were unable to convert on any of their three attempts from beyond the arc.

Patrick O'Connor led the way for Washington and Lee with 14 points and 11 rebounds for the double-double as he shot six-for-nine from the field. Drew Kimberly and Jim Etling had 10 points apiece while Kimberly added six points and two assists. As a team, the Generals shot 39.2 percent (20-for-51) for the game and held a 37-32 rebounding advantage.

Emory & Henry senior guard Stephen Brown (Charleston, S.C.) scored a team-high 10 points off the bench while senior guard Malcolm Green (Marshville, N.C.) had eight points and led all players with 13 rebounds. Freshman forward Alex Jones (Lake Worth, Fla.) notched eight points and three rebounds. The Wasps were 20-for-53 (37.7%) for the fame from the field and hit six-of-22 three-point attempts.

E&H will be on the road on Wednesday when it travels to Greensboro, N.C., for an ODAC matchup with Guilford College. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
