Eastern Mennonite Men’s Basketball Downs Emory & Henry, 72-58, Saturday Afternoon

EMORY, Va. – The Eastern Mennonite University Men's Basketball Team (8-7, 3-3 ODAC) picked up a 72-58 road victory over Emory & Henry College (2-13, 0-6 ODAC) Saturday afternoon at Bob Johnson Court in the John Rutledge King Center.

The two teams battled during the first half through four ties and five lead changes. Eastern Mennonite led by as much as seven points (18-11) with 9:19 to go before the break, but an 8-1 run by E&H tied things up at 19 points apiece. The Wasps would go up 26-23 prior to the half but the Royals took a 31-30 advantage into the intermission.

EMU slowly built a double-digit lead in the second half, going up by as much as 12 points (54-42 with 8:04 remaining). Emory & Henry went on a 12-5 run to cut the margin to 59-54. Both squads traded baskets back and forth before the Royals scored the final nine points of the game to win, 72-58.

Eastern Mennonite was led by Marcel Crump, who totaled 26 points and added four rebounds. David Falk had a double-double with 21 points and a game-high 15 boards. Ryan Bush had nine points off the bench while Woody Furbush pulled down nine rebounds.

As a team, EMU shot 48 percent (24-for-50) but only connected on 52.4 percent (22-of-42) of its free throw attempts. The Royals held a 44-36 advantage on points in the paint, and also had 22 points off 20 Wasp turnovers.

Emory & Henry senior forward Charles Smith (Fayetteville, N.C.) led the way with 12 points on six-for-nine shooting and added six rebounds. Senior forward Cameron Coles (Charlottesville, Va.) had eight points and seven boards while senior guard Malcolm Green (Marshville, N.C.) added eight points off the bench.

The Wasps shot just 21-for-62 (33.9%) from the field but hit 77.8 percent (14-of-18) of their free throw attempts. E&H held a slight 40-39 rebounding advantage but its 15 offensive boards resulted in 14 second-chance points.

Emory & Henry will travel to Roanoke on Wednesday for a 7:00 p.m., ODAC matchup with the Maroons.
