Hampden-Sydney Men’s Basketball Drops Emory & Henry, 85-57, Saturday In ODAC Action

EMORY, Va. – The Hampden-Sydney College Men's Basketball Team (11-8, 5-5 ODAC) shot 59.2 percent (29-for-49) for the game en route to a 85-57 victory over Emory & Henry College (2-17, 0-10 ODAC) Saturday afternoon at Bob Johnson Court.

E&H scored the first four points of the game and after H-SC tied things up at six, went on to lead again by a 10-6 margin. The Tigers then used an 18-2 run for a 24-12 lead and pushed their advantage to 16 (36-20) at the 2:34 mark of the first half. The two squads traded baskets for the remainder of the half, for a 40-26 score at intermission in favor of Hampden-Sydney.

Coming out of the break, H-SC scored 10 of the first 14 points to push its lead to 30-50. The Wasps trimmed the deficit to 16, but the Tigers went on a 26-8 covering 7:38 for their largest lead of the contest (81-47). Emory & Henry scored seven of the last eight points of the game, however, to draw the difference under 30 at the final horn, 85-57.

Mike Murray paced Hampden-Sydney with 20 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals. Kodie Critzer had 12 points and four rebounds off the bench while Khobi Williamson added 10 points and seven boards. Greg Lewis and Mitch Owens each chipped in eight points for the Tigers. As a team, H-SC hit 11 of their 21 three-point attempts (52.4%) to add to their torrid shooting from the field. The Tigers held a 41-32 rebounding advantage and won the battle down low, 30-22.

Emory & Henry was led by sophomore guard Kevin Anzenberger (Concord, N.C.) with 13 points, four rebounds and three assists despite going out of the game with a leg injury in the first half. Senior guard Malcolm Green (Marshville, N.C.) had 13 points and four rebounds as well for the Wasps while senior forward Charles Smith (Fayetteville, N.C.) tallied 10 points and three boards.

E&H shot just 32.7 percent (18-for-55) from the floor and hit only 16-of-32 (50%) of its free throw attempts. Though they were outrebounded in the game, the Wasps had 11 offensive boards and scored 12 second chance points.

Emory & Henry will travel to Lynchburg on Wednesday for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference matchup with Randolph College. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
