Emory & Henry Men’s Basketball Defeats Roanoke, 77-75, In ODAC Thriller Wednesday

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Men's Basketball Team (4-20, 2-13 ODAC) made it two wins in three days with a thrilling 77-75 victory over Roanoke College (11-12, 5-10 ODAC) at Bob Johnson Court. All five of the Wasps' starters reached double figures in scoring in the win.

Emory & Henry got out to a 16-6 lead at the 15:05 mark of the first half and pushed its advantage to 22-10 with 13:15 on the clock. The dozen-point lead would be the largest of the game as Roanoke clawed back to go up 28-26 thanks to an 18-4 run. The two teams traded baskets and the lead seven times in the first half alone as the Wasps took a 40-38 lead into the locker room.

Roanoke scored eight of the first 10 points of the second half to go up 46-42 for its largest lead. E&H surged back to lead 55-49, but the Maroons tied the game at 56 with 11:32 on the clock. The biggest margin of the final 10 minutes was a four-point lead by the Wasps as the outcome of the game was in question until the final moments.

With Emory & Henry ahead by two with 11 seconds remaining, Roanoke attempted a layup to send the contest to overtime, but it caromed off the rim and was snagged by a Wasp player to seal the victory. Overall, the game saw 11 ties and 17 lead changes.

Freshman forward Brandon Self (Norfolk, Va.) had a team-high 21 points and added nine rebounds, going seven-for-11 from the field and seven-for-eight from the free throw line. Senior forward Charles Smith (Fayetteville, N.C.) netted just the second double-double of his career, tying his personal bests with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Senior forward Tyler Mullins (Hazard, Ky.) had 12 point, five rebounds, two assists and two steals while senior guard Malcolm Green (Marshville, N.C.) tallied 12 points, seven boards and six steals. Freshman guard Ryan Gravley (Austinville, Va.) continued to impress with 10 points, five rebounds and five assists.

The Wasps shot 41.1 percent (30-for-73) for the game and connected on 15-of-22 (68.2%) of their free throw attempts. E&H held a 50-32 advantage on points in the paint, and tallied 11 steals on 15 Roanoke turnovers.

John Fitchett led all players with 23 points and added five rebounds and four assists off the bench for the Maroons. Daniel Eacho went for 17 points and nine rebounds while Seth Bradley and Cameron Smith scored 13 and 10 points, respectively. Roanoke hit seven three-pointers in the game and its bench outscored Emory & Henry's, 41-3.

E&H will travel to Harrisonburg, Va. on Saturday for the final game of the regular season. The Wasps will take on the Royals of Eastern Mennonite University at 7:00 p.m.
