Charles Smith Named ODAC Men’s Basketball Player Of The Week

FOREST, Va. - Emory & Henry College's Charles Smith has been selected as the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, ODAC officials announced Monday. It is the first time since the 2011-12 season that an E&H player has received this honor.

The senior from Fayetteville, N.C., led the Wasps to a 2-1 week, snapping a 20-game losing skid.  Emory & Henry posted home victories over Guilford College, 78-74, Monday and defeated Roanoke College, 77-75, Wednesday. For the week, Smith averaged 17.7 points to lead the team on 23-for-42 (54.8%) shooting and added 7.3 rebounds per contest.

Monday against the Quakers, Smith was six-for-seven from the field for 17 points and added seven rebounds and three assists. The squad shot 56.3 percent for the game en route to defeating the then-second ranked team in the ODAC, 78-74.

Wednesday night in the Wasps' 77-75 win over the Maroons, Smith tied his career-highs with 18 points and 10 rebounds, for just the second double-double of his career. Emory & Henry saw all five of its starters reach double figures in the contest and committed only nine turnovers for the win.

Smith kept Emory & Henry in the game Saturday night against Eastern Mennonite with another 18-point performance. E&H battled back from two deficits in the second half to cut the EMU lead to one point with 2:36 to go, but the Royals scored eight straight to pull away for the 84-75 victory.

Emory & Henry will travel to face the same Eastern Mennonite team on Tuesday evening in the 2014 ODAC Tournament First Round. Tipoff between the Wasps and Royals is set for 7:00 p.m. at Yoder Arena.
