EMORY, Va. – The No. 1 Randolph-Macon College Men's Basketball Team (23-2, 16-0 ODAC) connected on 13 three-pointers on the afternoon as it defeated Emory & Henry College (5-20, 4-12 ODAC) at Bob Johnson Court Saturday. The Yellow Jackets are the top-ranked team in NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com.
R-MC got out to a 10-0 lead at the 17:28 mark of the first half, scoring on their first four possessions of the game. E&H responded by scoring the next 10 points to tie things up, 10-10, with 13:34 on the clock. The Yellow Jackets pulled back ahead thanks in part to a 10-2 run and finished the half with 10 of the final 14 points for a 41-32 advantage at the intermission.
Randolph-Macon pushed the lead to 16 (51-35) in the first four minutes of the second half and would lead by as much as 24 points with 10:12 left to play. Emory & Henry would get no closer than 17 points the rest of the way but closed the game with a 7-2 run to make the final score 82-63.
R-MC's Joe Hassell led all players with 19 points and 11 rebounds as he went seven-for-12 from the field and hit a pair of three-pointers. Rip Engle connected on four shots from beyond the arc for 12 points while Chris Hamilton had nine points and four boards. Lamont Moore added eight points and four rebounds off the bench. As a team, the Yellow Jackets shot 45.9 percent (28-for-61) from the floor and hit 52 percent (13-of-25) of their free throws. Randolph-Macon held a 44-40 rebounding advantage including a 13-10 margin on the offensive glass.
Wasp sophomore forward Brandon Self (Norfolk, Va.) had a team-high 13 points and added seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Myles Turner (Richmond, Va.) contributed 10 points, seven rebounds and two assists while freshman guard John Shelor (Giles, Va.) notched 10 points and four boards hitting a pair of three's in the contest. Junior guard Kevin Anzenberger (Concord, N.C.) put up nine points and six boards as well for E&H.
Emory & Henry shot just 36.8 percent (21-for-57) from the field, hitting only seven of its 26 (26.9%) of its three-point attempts. The Wasps committed 13 turnovers, compared to 11 by the Yellow Jackets, but held a 24-22 advantage on points in the paint.
Emory & Henry will now await the completion of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference regular season on Sunday and the announcement of the pairings for the ODAC Tournament. The Wasps will play in the first round of the Tournament on Monday evening at 7:00 p.m.
