Emory & Henry Men's Basketball To Open ODAC Play Against Hampden-Sydney Saturday

EMORY, Va. - The Emory & Henry men’s basketball team begins its ODAC play this Saturday in a home game vs. Hampden-Sydney. The Tigers come in to Emory posting a 4-0 (1-0 ODAC) record and boast the top defense in the conference by allowing only 55.2 points per game. Last season, Hampden-Sydney defeated the Wasps twice in conference play. This game gives E&H the chance to open up the ODAC with a bang.

The Wasps have struggled so far this year, compiling a 0-6 record. However, the Wasps have improved on some key areas that may lead the team to victory. E&H is scoring more than they were last year, posting 69.2 points per game. The team is shooting better from three (33.8% from 29%) and better from the free throw line (65% from 59%).  The Wasps will look for these offensive improvements to pay dividends in the ODAC. The offense has improved thanks to sophomore Myles Turner’s return from an injury-riddled season last year. Turner received a medical hardship waiver after only playing in three games last year. Back and fully healthy, Turner leads the team in points (15.3), rebounds (4.8), assists (3.0), and steals (1.5). In limited time, junior Trevor Gilliam is leading the way in three point percentage at 40%. Junior Kevin Anzenberger is not far behind at 38.1%. At the free throw line, Ryan Gravley leads the way with 82.4%.

The ODAC is going to be tough once again for the Wasps. E&H plays 4 of the top 5 preseason teams twice this season, starting with Hampden-Sydney. The Wasps second ODAC game is at Guilford versus a powerful team that is averaging the second most points in the ODAC with 77.2. Guilford was near the top of the ODAC last season, when the Wasps shocked the Quakers. E&H will look to keep the magic going against the conference foe. Washington and Lee and Shenandoah, who were picked 9th and 11th respectively, are next in the ODAC for the Wasps. Both of those teams are among the bottom in scoring defense in the conference. The Wasps first game versus Randolph-Macon takes place on January 24th. Randolph-Macon, who has made the NCAA tournament each of the last five years, will be a tough test for everyone in the conference. The team will also close with the Yellow Jackets this season. Despite being picked 12th in the conference, the Wasps will look to shock teams like it did at the end of last season.
