Emory & Henry Men’s Basketball Blows By Montreat, 113-73, Thursday Evening

MONTREAT, N.C. – The Emory & Henry College Men's Basketball Team (4-5) opened up a 51-35 lead at halftime en route to a 113-73 victory over Montreat College (2-8) Thursday evening on the road. The 113 points scored by the Wasps were the most since they equaled that total against Methodist University on November 21, 2008. The 40-point margin of victory was the highest in nine years, dating back to a 47-point (141-98) win over Lynchburg College on December 9, 2006.

Emory & Henry saw five players reach double figures in scoring as 14 of the 15 players who suited up made their mark in the scoring column. Sophomore guard John Shelor (Giles, Va.) led all players with 18 points, hitting six of his seven attempts from three-point range. Freshman guard Clif Conley (Galax, Va.) added 16 points with four treys as the Wasps combined for a total of 15 three-pointers in the contest.

Sophomore guard Johnny McLean (Charlotte, N.C.) went nine-for-10 from the free throw line, completing the game with 11 points while freshman forward Aaron Ferguson (Princeton, W.Va.)  had 10 points and nine rebounds on five-for-six shooting. Sophomore forward Chase Branscomb (Bristol, Tenn.) chipped in 10 points and five boards as well.

Junior guard Myles Turner (Richmond, Va.) posted eight points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals while junior guard Ryan Gravley (Austinville, Va.) contributed six points and a game-high seven assists. As a team, Emory & Henry shot 61.5 percent (40-for-65) from the field and connected on 18-of-26 (69.2%) of its free throw. The Wasps held a 45-22 rebounding advantage, including a 12-4 margin on the offensive glass.

Montreat was paced by Amir Davis' 16 points while Alonzo Mobley, Sam Mckinney and Demontre Jones each chipped in 12 points. Mobley added two rebounds, two assists and three steals to his tally. The Cavaliers shot 43.8 percent for the game and scored 26 points at the free throw line but committed 24 turnovers in the game.

Emory & Henry will next compete on Tuesday, December 29 when it faces Hendrix College at the Rhodes Classic in Memphis, Tennessee. Tipoff between the Wasps and Warriors is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Central Standard Time (5:00 p.m. Eastern).
