Virginia Wesleyan Men’s Basketball Defeats Emory & Henry, 92-71, Sunday Afternoon

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University Men's Basketball Team (2-3, 2-0 ODAC) earned a 92-71 Old Dominion Athletic Conference win over Emory & Henry College (0-4, 0-4 ODAC) Sunday afternoon on the campus of University of Lynchburg.

How It Happened
- The two squads battled back and forth early with VWU taking a 10-9 lead at the 15:57 mark of the opening half. An 8-2 run by the Marlins which covered 1:40 gave pushed the margin to 18-11.
- Down by a 23-15 score, Emory & Henry went on an 18-5 run to gain a 33-28 advantage with 5:27 to go before the break. Virginia Wesleyan erased the deficit, scoring 10 of the final 14 points of the half to go into the locker room up, 38-37.
- Returning to action, the Marlins opened the second frame with a 16-2 run to go up 54-39 with 16:24 on the clock. E&H closed the gap to nine (56-47) less than three minutes later but VWU used an 11-2 surge to lead, 67-49.
- Emory & Henry scored 11 of the next 14 points to again trim the margin to single digits, but 11 straight by Virginia Wesleyan made the score 81-61 with 5:25 to go. VWU would lead by as much as 24 down the stretch as it cruised to the 92-71 win.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Senior guard Robert Holliday, Jr. (Kansas City, Kan.) led all players with 22 points and added seven rebounds and three assists.
- Sophomore guard Malcolm Morgan (Concord, N.C.) had 13 points, six boards and two blocks while sophomore guard Kevin Grau Rodriguez (Tampa, Fla.) put up 12 points and five rebounds.

Virginia Wesleyan Individual Leaders
- Tyree Golston posted a team-high 19 points to go along with five rebounds, three assists and two steals as five different Marlins hit double figures in scoring.
- Tim Fisher and Lamont Steward had 15 points each as Steward added seven rebounds and two steals. Jordan White put up 14 points off the bench while Corey Pelham contributed 13 points, seven boards and three assists.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry shot 40.6 percent (26-for-64) for the contest and made nine three-pointers. The Wasps hit just 10-of-19 (52.6%) of their free throws.
- Virginia Wesleyan made 32-of-65 (49.2%) of their field goal attempts, including 54.8 percent in the second half. The Marlins connected on 13 shots from beyond the arc and went 15-for-17 (88.2%) from the charity stripe.
- VWU held a 40-35 rebounding advantage and outscored E&H, 20-17, on second-chance points.
- The Wasps held a 34-32 margin on points in the paint, but the Marlins led, 21-11, on points off turnovers.
