Emory & Henry Men’s Golf Season Preview

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Men's Golf Team is beginning its first spring season since the sport's return this fall. Justin Harvey is at the helm of the golf program which has already played in four tournaments during the fall semester. Although the teams have not finished as high as they wanted to in those early tournaments, the Wasps have defeated two ODAC schools.

During the Ted Keller Invitational, Emory & Henry finished higher than three other opponents, including ODAC foe, Roanoke College. The Wasps were led by freshman Carlos Andrade (Guayaquil, ECUADOR), who finished third overall in the tournament with a score of +9 (149). He also finished third with an even score at the King University Invitational in September. Andrade has led E&H in each of its tournaments this season. The team will look to Andrade's lead to finish higher and higher in the standings.

This young Wasps' team is also led by two seniors. Ryan Lewis (Floyd, Va.) and T.J. Widener (Damascus, Va.) are the upperclassmen that the team will look up to for guidance. Widener has played in three of the four tournaments for the Wasps and has finished as high as fourth for the squad. Matthew Largen (Abingdon, Va.), a junior, has also been instrumental in creating a strong culture for this new program.

Freshmen Ben Owen (Rogersville, Tenn.) and Richard Fishwick (Roanoke, Va.) have been important in the success of the team thus far. Owen has finished second for E&H in all four tournaments, while Fishwick has finished as high as third on several occasions. Luke Montalbano (Rumford, R.I.) and Tanner Carter (Saltville, Va.) also saw action in tournaments during the fall. Sophomores Wes Blaylock (Bristol, Va.) and Ryan Hyatt (Bristol, Va.) join the team this spring and will compete for a place in the top five immediately.

Emory & Henry has five events scheduled for this spring, beginning with a match-play event against Bluefield College and Bluefield State College on Saturday at Glenrochie Country Club in Abingdon. The first tournament will be the TaylorMade/adidas Intercollegiate at the Dataw Island Club on St. Helena Island, South Carolina from March 13-14. The Wasps will conclude the season at the ODAC Championship on April 23-25 at the Wintergreen Resort's Stoney Creek Golf Course in Nellysford, Virginia.
