Piedmont Men’s Soccer Slips Past Emory & Henry, 2-1, In Double Overtime Sunday

EMORY, Va. – The Piedmont College Men's Soccer Team (2-2) scored the winning goal with just 25 seconds remaining in the second overtime Sunday afternoon, to defeat Emory & Henry College (2-2) by a 2-1 score at Fred Selfe Stadium. Senior forward P.J. Henson (Charlotte, N.C.) was honored before the contest for his record-breaking goal on Wednesday evening against Averett University.

After a scoreless first half, both sides came out after the intermission ready for play. Emory & Henry struck first in the 53rd minute as Henson took a centering pass from junior midfielder Jacob Exum (Hendersonville, Tenn.) and placed it in the bottom left corner of the goal past the keeper.

The match appeared to be in E&H's hands until just 3:19 remaining. Piedmont's Mason Flynn (Grayson, Ga.) took a ball off a deflection in the box and equalized the match at one goal each.

The two teams battled through over 19-and-a-half minutes of overtime play before the Lions' Sidney Smith (Dallas, Ga.) corralled the ball inside the area and was able to place it past the keeper for the match-winning goal at the 109:35 mark of the contest.

Piedmont goalkeeper Brian Gaid (Marietta, Ga.) picked up the win making three saves while Emory & Henry freshman Micah Varner (Charlotte, N.C.) made five saves despite taking the loss in his first college appearance.

The Wasps will host the Quakers of Guilford College on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. to begin Old Dominion Athletic Conference action.
