Virginia Wesleyan Men’s Soccer Routs Emory & Henry, 9-1, Saturday Afternoon

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan College Men's Soccer Team (5-10-1, 3-6 ODAC) kept its hopes alive for a berth in the 2011 Old Dominion Athletic Tournament with a 9-1 win over visiting Emory & Henry College (4-12, 1-8 ODAC). The eight-goal defeat is the worst for the Wasps this season.

The Marlins got on the board mid-way through the third minute as Nick Forno got a goal on a header from Adam Stringer's corner kick.

Emory & Henry appeared to be up to the challenge, as senior defender Brian Butler (Shelby, N.C.) scored on a header from the right side of the box at the 20:29 mark.

The contest would remain 1-1 until Virginia Wesleyan scored two goals in the last five minutes of the first half to take a 3-1 lead into the break.

After the intermission, it was all Marlins, as Virginia Wesleyan posted six goals in the final 45 minutes. Isaac Arrington and Blake Eshelman each tallied two scores on the day for VWC while Roberto Rosales and Pops Richards both had two assists.

Virginia Wesleyan's Ryan Zmuda tallied two saves, picking up the win in goal while E&H junior Justin Spencer (Statesville, N.C.) made 10 saves despite the loss.

For the match, the Marlins outshot the Wasps by a 34-5 margin and held a 13-1 advantage on corner kicks.

Emory & Henry will conclude the 2011 season on Wednesday when it travels to Washington and Lee University for a 4:30 p.m., match.
