Randolph Men’s Soccer Downs Emory & Henry, 5-2, Saturday Evening

EMORY, Va. – The Randolph College Men's Soccer Team (3-3-1, 1-1 ODAC) picked up a 5-2 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory over Emory & Henry College (2-7-1, 0-1-1 ODAC) Saturday evening at Fred Selfe Stadium. The contest served as the Wasps annual Friends and Family Night and also featured members of Highlands Youth Soccer Club playing games during the halftime break.

Randolph got on the board early in the 13th minute as Nick Cornell served in a corner kick that found the head of John Adams, who put the ball in the net on the near post.

The WildCats made it 2-0 with 18:13 on the clock on a rebound off of a penalty kick. Joe Skaja's strike went off the E&H keeper and he was able to collect it and convert the score.

Emory & Henry cut the lead to 2-1 just after the half-hour mark (32:47). Freshman defender Tory Schneider (Williamsburg, Va.) sent a cross from wide left which found the head of freshman midfielder Seth Phillips (Ooltewah, Tenn.) who hammered it home past a befuddled WildCat goaltender.

The score would hold at 2-1 for the remainder of the first half but the Wasps would have several chances to equalize before the break.

Randolph got two goals in quick succession from Grant Collier in the first 10 minutes of the second period. His first came on a loose ball off a free kick in the box which he was able to settle and finish for the score. Collier scored again just 33 seconds later (54:25) as Cory Sindle set him up with a pass which he one-timed from 10 yards out.

The final two minutes of the contest was high-energy and saw scores from both sides. The WildCats put an extra insurance goal on the board to make the score 5-1 as Tyler Gilchrist took a cross from John Vecchietti in the center of the box that he headed past the Wasp keeper.

Emory & Henry scored with just 57 seconds remaining on the clock with freshman forward Devon Brodkin (Blacksburg, Va.) crossing a ball in from the right side to find sophomore forward Konner Dozark (Tampa, Fla.) for the score and the final 5-2 margin.

Randolph goalkeeper C.J. Stevens picked up the win as he made four saves. E&H senior Justin Spencer (Statesville, N.C.) had five saves in 77 minutes of play while sophomore Seth Drummond (Tampa, Fla.) rounded out the final 13 minutes in the frame for the Wasps

Emory & Henry will travel to Bridgewater on Wednesday afternoon to take on the Eagles at 4:00 p.m.
