Washington and Lee Men’s Soccer Gets Past Emory & Henry, 2-0, Wednesday

EMORY, Va. – The Washington and Lee University Men's Soccer Team (8-3-1, 5-1-1 ODAC) picked up a 2-0 victory over Emory & Henry College (2-11-2, 0-5-2 ODAC ) in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play Wednesday evening at Fred Selfe Stadium.

With the victory, W&L Head Coach Rolf Piranian earned his 300th win as the Generals' mentor. He becomes the second ODAC soccer coach to win 300 matches this season and the 38th in NCAA Division III history.

The two squads battled for control of the midfield for the first half hour of the contest until Washington and Lee's Toby D'Ambola found Zach Colby with a thru ball down the right side that Colby finished to the near post at the 30:21 mark. The score would remain 1-0 through the remainder of the first half.

After the break, the Wasps stayed up and pressed the Generals through the center of the pitch for much of the second half but were unable to find the feet of their forwards for scoring opportunities.

With just 9:12 remaining in the contest, W&L won a free kick on the left side of the field above the 18-yard box. Colby was the one to stand over the ball and arced a shot over the E&H wall and into the net to make the score 2-0 and put the match out of reach.

The Generals held a 17-2 shot advantage in the contest and also led 7-3 on corner kicks.

Washington and Lee goalkeeper Albert Civitarese picked up the shutout win while Emory & Henry senior net-minder Justin Spencer (Statesville, N.C.) made five saves despite the loss.

Emory & Henry will travel to Winchester on Saturday to take on ODAC newcomer Shenandoah University. Kickoff between the Wasps and Hornets is set for 3:00 p.m.
