Hampden-Sydney Men's Soccer Slips Past Emory & Henry, 1-0, On Senior Night

EMORY, Va. - The Hampden-Sydney College Men's Soccer Team (6-10, 5-5 ODAC) got a goal just before halftime and was able to hang on through a late barrage of shots by Emory & Henry College (2-13-3, 0-7-3 ODAC) to steal a 1-0 victory in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play Saturday night at Fred Selfe Stadium.

The contest also served as Senior Night for E&H which honored seniors Justin Spencer (Statesville, N.C.), Will Bodfish (Morganton, N.C.), Brock Hanna (Marion, Va.), Jesus Mendoza Alejo (Villagran, Gto., MEXICO), Heath Culbreth (Tryon, N.C.), Brandon Brodkin (Blacksburg, Va.) and Jon Bruno (Mooresville, N.C.) prior to the contest.

Emory & Henry controlled the opening 15 minutes of the contest but was not able to make the final pass to their strikers to have opportunities at the net. With 2:58 to go before the end of the first half, James Lawrence took a shot from the left side of the 18-yard box and put it past the goalkeeper to give Hampden-Sydney a 1-0 lead.

The majority of the second half was played in the midfield and was met with physical play by both squads. The Wasps began to get chances in the final 20 minutes and kept the pressure on the Tigers' defense. E&H put 13 shots toward the goal after the break, with many coming in the last 10 minutes of the contest.

With the full 90 minutes nearly elapsed, Emory & Henry got one final chance to force extra time. The Wasps played a long ball into the right side of the box, but the Tigers packed the defense in and were able to block all attempts on the net.

Spencer finished the match with six saves while H-SC's Blake Carrey had three saves en route to the shutout.

Bodfish led the E&H attack with four shots while sophomore forward Konner Dozark (Tampa, Fla.) and freshman defender Tory Schneider (Williamsburg, Va.) each had three shots in the contest.

Emory & Henry will travel to face Roanoke College at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening in its final match of the 2012 season.
