SALEM, Va. - The Roanoke College Men's Soccer Team (10-4-1, 8-2-1 ODAC) converted a penalty-kick goal in the final 10 seconds of the double overtime to defeat Emory & Henry College, 2-1, Tuesday evening at home. With the win, the Maroons earned the number-one seed in the upcoming 2012 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament.
Roanoke got on the board in the 14th minute, earning a penalty kick. A.J. Tierce converted the opportunity to put the Maroons up 1-0.
Just before halftime, the Wasps were able to equalize. Senior defender Heath Culbreth (Tryon, N.C.) snuck a shot into the right side of the goal that got past the keeper, making the score 1-1.
After the break, the two teams battled back and forth but neither was able to find the back of the net. Roanoke had 11 shots on goal in regulation, but each of them were stopped by Emory & Henry senior keeper Justin Spencer (Statesville, N.C.).
In the first overtime, the two teams only managed one shot apiece and the contest went to the second 10-minute extra period.
It appeared as if the match would end in a draw, but the referee awarded a penalty kick to Roanoke with just seven seconds remaining on the clock. Tierce once again answered the call, and converted the kick to give the Maroons a 2-1 victory.
Spencer finished the contest with 13 saves despite the loss while Maroon net-minder Cole Sinclair picked up the win.
Emory & Henry concludes the season with a 2-14-3 overall record and a 0-8-3 mark in ODAC play. The Wasps made significant strides this season, with 10 of their 14 losses coming by two goals or less, including six league contests.
