Emory & Henry Men’s Soccer Defeats Anderson 3-2 In Season Opener Friday

ANDERSON, Ind. – The Emory & Henry College Men's Soccer Team (1-0) earned a 3-2 double-overtime victory over Anderson (Ind.) University (0-1) Friday afternoon in the Raven-Quaker Classic. It is the first time since 2011 that the Wasps have earned a victory in their first outing of the year.

Emory & Henry got on the board just 28 seconds into the match with a goal by sophomore forward Zach Quest (Charlotte, N.C.). It was the second-fastest goal in program history, bested only by P.J. Henson's 18th-second score against Randolph during the 2008 campaign.

The Ravens leveled the score at 1-1 with 1:13 to go before the break. Elliott Reiff served up a ball for Guimps Pierre which he placed in the back of the net.

Just before the halftime whistle, Quest made it 2-1 for the Wasps, scoring off of a pass by freshman forward Evan Melton (Liberty, N.C.). Quest's brace marks the first multi-goal game by an E&H player since 2011 when Luis Peralta netted three goals at Ferrum.

Anderson equalized early in the 74th minute to knot the match at two goals apiece. Both Reiff and Kenneth Kantande were credited with an assist on the play as Nick Briles scored the goal.

With the full 90 minutes culminating in a 2-2 tie, the two sides were set for a pair of 10-minute sudden victory extra periods. The Wasps had a pair of chances in the first overtime, but the Ravens' goalkeeper kept them out of the net.

With just 2:58 remaining in the second overtime, E&H claimed the 3-2 victory. Junior forward Pierce Moreland (Bristol, Tenn.) slotted home a corner kick by freshman midfielder Ty Stubbs (Huntersville, N.C.).

Anderson held a 27-9 shot advantage including a 12-5 mark in shots on goal. The Ravens also had 11 corner kicks compared to three for the Wasps.

E&H sophomore Didier Grillet (Matthews, N.C.) earned the win in goal, tying his career-high with 10 saves. Nathan Wadley suffered the loss for Anderson, allowing three goals with two saves.

Emory & Henry will remain on the road on Saturday when it faces off against Earlham College in the Raven-Quaker Classic. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
