GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Guilford College Men's Soccer Team (5-9-2, 4-3-2 ODAC) got out to a 4-0 first-half lead and held on for the 7-3 win over visiting Emory & Henry College (3-10-1, 1-8 ODAC) Wednesday night at the Armfield Athletic Center in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play.
The Quakers got out to a 3-0 lead in the opening 20 minutes of the game. Christian Torres scored a pair of goals including one off of a corner kick served in by Colin Dillon. Dakota Rock got the scoring started in the fifth minute, assisted by Angel Valencia.
GC made it 4-0 at the 26:00 mark when Jonny Goffredi put a ball past the E&H keeper that was deflected in the middle of the pitch.
Emory & Henry got a goal late in the half to make the score 4-1. Sophomore midfielder Zach Griffin (Mebane, N.C.) took a free kick on the right side and found freshman midfielder Cody Carruth (Powhatan, Va.) at the back post for the score.
Guilford added a fifth goal just 30 seconds later to make the halftime score 5-1 as Kyle Bias beat the last defender to receive a pass from Chase Beguin and put it in for the score.
The Wasps came out of the break and scored a goal in the just 25 seconds into the second half. Junior defender Jimmy Wilmouth (Forest, Va.) tallied an unassisted goal from inside the six-yard box to make close the gap to 5-2.
Guilford Albion Ida added another score in the 76th minute.
E&H reached the three-goal mark for the first time since September 7 with a score by senior midfielder Jared Eiriksson (Blackstone, Va.), who went one-on-one with the goalkeeper at the 78:00 mark.
The Quakers got the final goal of the match to make the score 7-3. Ida was on the assisting side of thing this time as he found Corey McDonough for the goal.
Guilford held a 26-11 advantage on shots and a 9-0 margin on corner kicks. The contest also saw six different players receive cautions.
GC's Marko Mandalinic made three saves as he earned the win while the E&H goalkeeping tanedem of sophomore Didier Grillet (Matthews, N.C.) and freshman Daniel Scharisch (Newport News, Va.) combined for 13 stops.
Emory & Henry will return home on Saturday to face Virginia Wesleyan College at Fred Selfe Stadium. The contest is set for a 5:00 p.m., kickoff.
