Earlham Men’s Soccer Escapes Emory & Henry, 3-2, Saturday Afternoon

RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College Men's Soccer Team (1-1) scored the go-ahead goal in the 69th minute to defeat visiting Emory & Henry College (0-2-1) by a 3-2 score Saturday afternoon in the final day of the Raven-Quaker Classic.

The Quakers got on the board late at the 13:51 mark of the game. Nicholas Dey went one-on-one with the goalkeeper and put the ball in the back of the net for the 1-0 Earlham lead.

Emory & Henry responded less than two minutes later when senior forward Pierce Moreland (Bristol, Tenn.) tallied his first goal of the year, tying the match at one.

Just past the half-hour mark, EC earned a free kick from an E&H foul. Victor Zuniga stood over the ball, and sent a strike in to give the Quakers a 2-1 halftime advantage.

After the break, the two teams went back and forth for the first 20 minutes. Wasp freshman defender Joel Tidman (Milford, Va.) notched his first collegiate goal on a header in the 68thh minute to give E&H an equalizer for the second time on the afternoon.

Earlham bounced back just 62 seconds later when Dey collected his second goal of the day on a service from Liam Ferguson. The 3-2 margin would be enough as Earlham came away with the victory.

The Quakers outshot the Wasps, 17-7, and put 10 of their chances on goal while E&H held a slim margin on corner kicks, 3-2.

EC's Nicola Manni and Diego Perea combined for three saves and the win while Emory & Henry junior Didier Grillet (Matthews, N.C.) stopped seven shots despite the loss.

Emory & Henry will next be in action on Friday, September 11 when it travels to Phoenixville, Pennsylvania for a match against the University of Valley Forge. Kickoff between the Wasps and Patriots is set for 4:00 p.m.
