Emory & Henry Men’s Soccer Draws, 1-1, With Virginia Wesleyan On The Road Saturday

NORFOLK, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Men's Soccer Team (2-2-2, 0-0-1 ODAC) opened Old Dominion Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon with a 1-1 draw against Virginia Wesleyan College (3-2-1, 0-0-1 ODAC) at Foster Field.

The draw snapped a 10-match losing streak against the Marlins dating back to the 2004 season when the Wasps earned a 2-1 victory at home.

Virginia Wesleyan got the scoring started at the 42:13 mark when Tanner Korfhagen's shot was saved by the goalkeeper but the rebound went to Skyler Simmons who immediately slotted it past the goalkeeper.

After the break, Emory & Henry put up an offensive flurry until the 57th minute when sophomore forward Jordan Couch (Abingdon, Va.) received a pass from sophomore forward Chandler Hundman (Abingdon, Va.) and placed it in the back of the net for his third goal of the season, tying the contest at a goal apiece.

Both the Marlins and Wasps had chances in the final 30 minutes to add to their scores, but the goalkeepers turned away every shot they saw. The two squads went through a pair of 10-minute overtime periods, but with neither team able to break through the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

Virginia Wesleyan held a 41-11 advantage on the shot chart, putting 16 of their attempts on goal. The Marlins also led 6-2 on corner kicks.

Wasp junior goalkeeper Didier Grillet (Matthews, N.C.) made a career-high 14 saves in the contest while VWC's Connor Kirkham stopped three shots as he earned the tie.

Emory & Henry will next compete on Saturday, September 26 when it hosts Randolph-Macon College in ODAC action at 3:00 p.m.
