Emory & Henry Men’s Soccer Defeats Hampden-Sydney, 2-1, Saturday In ODAC Action

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Men's Soccer Team (3-4-2, 1-2-1 ODAC) earned is first Old Dominion Athletic Conference win of the year, 2-1, over Hampden-Sydney Saturday afternoon. The match was played at Shellenberger Stadium on the campus of Lynchburg College due to wet and unplayable conditions at Hampden-Sydney.

It was just the third win for the Wasps over the Tigers and the first since the 1996 season. The victory also snapped a 10-year losing streak to HSC, dating back to a 1-1 tie in 2004. Hampden-Sydney received one first-place vote in the preseason coaches' poll.

Emory & Henry got on the board late in the 22nd minute on a score by freshman midfielder Colin Foley (Chesapeake, Va.). Sophomore forward Jordan Couch (Abingdon, Va.) was credited with the assist.

The Wasps doubled the score just 47 seconds later on a strike by freshman defender Nickolas Taylor (Portsmouth, Va.).

E&H would carry the 2-0 lead into the half and through the hour mark.

Hampden-Sydney drew the score to 2-1 in the 67th minute when Ryan Turner found Hunter Weiland, who put the ball past the goalkeeper.

The final 25 minutes of play saw seven cautions, five of which were against the Tigers and an ejection at the 70:29 mark which left HSC with 10 men for the remainder of the match.

Emory & Henry junior Didier Grillet (Matthews, N.C.) earned the win in goal, making four saves in 90 minutes of play. HSC's Cameron McFarlane stopped three shots despite suffering the loss.

Emory & Henry held a slim 14-13 margin on shots on goal while the two teams were tied, 5-5, on corner kicks. Hampden-Sydney was called offside four times in the game compared to just once for E&H.

The Wasps will host the Quakers of Guilford College on Wednesday, October 7 in an ODAC matchup at Fred Selfe Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m.
