Emory & Henry Men’s Soccer Defeats Guilford, 2-1, Wednesday Night At Home

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Men's Soccer Team (4-4-2, 2-2-1 ODAC) picked up its second Old Dominion Athletic Conference win in as many matches as it defeated visiting Guilford College (5-5, 2-2 ODAC) by a 2-1 score Wednesday at Fred Selfe Stadium.

It is the first time since the 2001 season that the Wasps have won two or more matches in conference action and only the fourth time in program history. The Wasps also defeat the Quakers for the first time since a 3-1 home victory in 2011.

E&H got things started just 3:28 into the game when freshman forward Tyequis Stallins (Chesapeake, Va.) found sophomore forward Jordan Couch (Abingdon, Va.), who transferred to E&H this fall from Guilford, with a pass. Couch made his move quickly and struck the ball into the back of the net.

The score would remain 1-0 through the first 45 minutes. Both teams tallied eight shots in the opening half as seven of the Wasps' shots went on goal compared to just three for the Quakers.

Just as the two squads got settled into the second half, Emory & Henry scored to double the lead, 2-0. In what was a repetition of the first half, Couch took a pass from Stallins in the 52nd minute and ripped it past the goalkeeper for the score.

Guilford closed the gap to 2-1 just over 25 minutes later on an unassisted goal by Mark Dandanell. The Quakers were unable to get any closer despite holding a 12-4 advantage on shots in the second period.

E&H junior goalkeeper Didier Grillet (Matthews, N.C.) picked up the win for the Wasps, stopping seven shots while Guilford's Eric Hayes made eight saves despite the loss.

The Quakers held a 20-12 advantage on shots in the game but the two teams tied, 10-10, on shots on goal. Guilford also took eight corner kicks while E&H earned none in the 90 minutes.

Emory & Henry will put its two-match win streak to the test on Saturday afternoon at 5:30 p.m., when it hosts Shenandoah University in an ODAC contest at Fred Selfe Stadium.
