EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Men's Soccer Team (4-4-3, 2-2-2 ODAC) kept its unbeaten streak alive Saturday evening with a 2-2 draw against Shenandoah University (4-5-2, 1-2-2 ODAC) at Fred Selfe Stadium.
The Wasps have posted a three-match unbeaten streak in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play for the first time since 1996 and just the fourth time in program history. E&H pushes its all-time series record with Shenandoah to 3-0-3 including a 2-0-2 mark with the Hornets as conference foes.
SU got the scoring started at the 8:30 mark of the game when Cody White settled a rebound off a free kick and struck it into the right side of the goal. Jonathan Mitchell was credited with the assist.
Emory & Henry equalized just 3:13 later when sophomore forward Jordan Couch (Abingdon, Va.) scored his league-leading sixth goal of the season after a pass through the box from freshman forward Tyequis Stallins (Chesapeake, Va.). It was the third time in two matches that the pair has teamed up for a score.
The Hornets went back on top late in the 22nd minute after a turnover in their attacking third. Jake Keiser's shot sailed over the goalkeeper's head, putting Shenandoah up 2-1, a margin that would hold through the end of the first half.
With 10:09 to play, the Wasps tied the game for a second time. Couch found senior defender Jimmy Wilmouth (Forest, Va.) on the left sideline with a backwards pass which Wilmouth hit into the six-yard box. The service was good enough on its own as it dipped at just the right moment and into the back of the net for the 2-2 score.
After 90 minutes of play, the two squads battled through a pair of 10-minute overtime periods but no more goals were to be scored.
Emory & Henry held a 28-23 advantage on shots but Shenandoah led 10-7 on shots on goal. The Wasps took four corner kicks to the Hornets' three and E&H was called offside five times in the match.
Wasp junior goalkeeper Didier Grillet (Matthews, N.C.) earned the draw in goal, making eight saves to move to 4-3-3 on the year while Keegan Fairchild of Shenandoah stopped four shots.
Emory & Henry will remain at home on Monday when it hosts Warren Wilson College in a non-conference contest at 6:00 p.m.
