FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Three members of the Emory & Henry College Men's Tennis Team have been selected to the 2012-13 VaSID All-State College Division Men's Tennis Team, VaSID officials announced Thursday. Recent graduates Matt Nelson (Galax, Va.) and Adam Henderson (Abingdon, Va.) and freshman Alex Minasyan (Moscow, RUSSIA) took home the honors for their accomplishments in the last season.
Nelson and Henderson were selected to the All-State Second Team in doubles after putting up a 16-8 overall record on the year at the Wasps' top pairing. The duo, who earned All-State First-Team honors last season, were 7-3 against Old Dominion Athletic Conference opponents and were named to the All-ODAC Second Team.
Nelson earns VaSID accolades for the third straight year while Henderson is honored for the second-straight season.
Minasyan posted a 13-4 overall record, playing mostly at number two singles for E&H with an 11-1 mark in dual matches. He went 9-1 against league competition and was selected to the All-ODAC Third Team.
As a team, the Wasps finished 14-4 on the season with an 8-2 mark in the league. E&H advanced to the semifinals of the 2013 ODAC Tournament, before falling to Bridgewater College. During the course of the season, Emory & Henry reeled of a 12 wins in 13 matches, with their lone setback in the stretch coming to league champion Washington and Lee University.
W&L's Hayden White was selected as State Player of the Year, while Virginia Wesleyan College's Graham Wilson was named Rookie of the Year. Todd Helbing of the University of Mary Washington earned Coach-of-the-Year honors for the third-straight season.
The VaSID All-State teams are selected by sports information directors of member institutions of the Virginia Sports Information Directors across the Commonwealth of Virginia. VaSID, founded in 1983, selects teams in two divisions (University and College) for 12 sports and three single-division teams in addition to Academic All-State teams across all sports.
