Southern Virginia Men’s Tennis Defeats Emory & Henry, 7-2, Wednesday Afternoon

EMORY, Va. – The Southern Virginia University Men's Tennis Team (2-1) picked up a 7-2 win over Emory & Henry College (1-2) Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at Richardson Tennis Courts.

The Knights got out to a 3-0 lead after sweeping the doubles portion of the match. E&H's closest match was at the second flight as senior Webster Gilley (Bristol, Tenn.) and freshman Kamil Aliev (Moscow, RUSSIA) lost by an 8-5 score.

Emory & Henry got its two points during singles play. Gilley came back at No. 3 singles after losing the first 10 games of the match to win (0-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-6)) in a third-set tiebreak. Junior John Hanlon (Bristol, Tenn.) dispatched his opponent at the sixth pairing by a 6-2, 6-2 score.

Freshmen John Ferguson (Gate City, Va.) and Luke Funkhouser (Gate City, Va.) both took their opponents to third sets while Aliev battled hard in his match at the premier singles flight.

The Wasps were originally scheduled to conclude the fall portion of their season on Sunday against Maryville (Tenn.) College, but will not play that match due to the Scots only having three available players. Arrangements for other competition are currently being explored.
