VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan College Softball Team (32-6, 16-2 ODAC) picked up an 11-3 victory over Emory & Henry College (11-23, 3-13 ODAC) Tuesday afternoon in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action. The contest was rescheduled from March 24, when Winter Storm Virgil forced the doubleheader to be cut short.
Emory & Henry got out to a 2-0 lead after the top of the first inning. With two runners on base and no outs, senior catcher Ashley Ebersole (Maurertown, Va.) hit an infield single to plate the first run of the contest. Freshman shortstop Hannah Bays (Abingdon, Va.) then hit a sacrfice fly to left field to drive in the second run.
VWC drew the margin to 2-1 in the bottom of the first. With Courtney Bogan on third base after a leadoff triple, Kelly Keys hit a sacrifice fly to right field. The Marlins added three runs in the second with Bogan driving in two with a triple. Keys notched her second sac fly on the day to plate Bogan.
The Wasps got their third run in tht top of the third as junior centerfielder Cortney Halsey (Independence, Va.) scored on an error by the left fielder to make the score 4-3.
After the bottom of the third, the contest was all Virginia Wesleyan. The Marlins got a run in the third on a single through the left side by Kayla Dost to make the score 5-4.
Keys singled to center field to drive in a run in the fourth while Season Dailey plated a pair on a single to center in the bottom of the fifth to satisfy the criteria for the Eight-Run Advantage Rule.
VWC was led by Bogan at the plate as she went three-for-four with four runs scored and two RBI. Keys drove in four runs with two sacrifice flies while Dailey plated a pair on her own. MacKenzie Creech picked up the win as she allowed just three runs on two hits while striking out six E&H batters.
The Wasps were led by Halsey as she scored two of their three runs and had one of two hits. Ebersole had the other hit and drove in a run. Sophomore Brandy Bryant (Salem, Va.) took the loss, allowing six earned runs on nine hits in three innings pitched.
Emory & Henry will return home for its final four games of the regular season. The Wasps will host the Hornets of Lynchburg College on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m., and will round out the year on Sunday with Senior Day against Randolph College, also at 2:00 p.m.
