Emory & Henry Softball Splits With Covenant Friday Afternoon On The Road

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The Emory & Henry College Softball Team (17-3, 0-0 ODAC) split its pair of games on Friday afternoon against Covenant College (15-17, 4-6 USA South). The Scots eked out a 3-0 win in game one before the Wasps escaped Northwest Georgia with a 2-0 victory in game two.

Covenant 3, Emory & Henry 0
- The Scots got on the board in the bottom of the third with a run on a single up the middle by Faith Manning. A throw home from Wasp junior centerfielder Erin Anderson (Aylett, Va.) prevented a second run from crossing for the third out of the inning.
- Covenant added two more for the final 3-0 score in the sixth. Erika Mast's single drove in one run and a second came around to score on a throwing error.
- Taylor Epes earned the win, allowing just four hits in five shutout innings of work. Carsyn Stone picked up the save, in two no-hit innings.
- E&H sophomore Tiffany Cole (Wise, Va.) fell to 7-3 on the season with the loss, allowing just three runs on nine hits with a pair of strikeouts.

Emory & Henry 2, Covenant 0
- Emory & Henry jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second after an attempt by the Covenant catcher to throw out a runner on a double-steal attempt went into the outfield. Freshman left fielder Kendall Varner (Bassett, Va.), who started the play on second, came around to score on the error.
- The Wasps squeezed out a second run in the fifth when the centerfielder dropped a two-out fly ball, allowing sophomore Caitlyn Yates (Coeburn, Va.) to cross the plate.
- The two runs were all that was needed as E&H took the second game of the doubleheader.
- Wasp right-hander Cameron Derr (Cornelius, N.C.) remained perfect on the year as she picked up the complete-game shutout, striking out eight with just three hits.
- Cris Gant suffered the loss, allowing two unearned runs on three hits despite striking out 10.

Up Next
- E&H will travel to Salem, Virginia on Tuesday, March 27 to face Roanoke College in an ODAC doubleheader.
- First pitch between the Wasps and Maroons is set for 5:00 p.m.
