Emory & Henry Softball Splits With No. 6 Christopher Newport Sunday Afternoon

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Softball Team (1-1, 0-0 ODAC) got the 2019 season off to a start with a doubleheader split against No. 6 Christopher Newport University (1-1, 0-0 CAC) Sunday afternoon on the road. The Wasps rallied from a pair of deficits to take game one, 5-4, while the Captains claimed game two by a 3-0 score.

Game One – Emory & Henry 5, No. 6 Christopher Newport 4
- E&H scored twice in the second highlighted by a successful squeeze play by senior catcher Amanda Whitlow (Riner, Va.).
- The Captains took a 3-2 lead after three thanks in part to a pair of solo home runs by Caroline Helmer and Sarah Proctor.
- In the fifth, the Wasps tied things up at 3-3 on a single to center field by sophomore Allyson Steadman (Kingsport, Tenn.).
- CNU answered with a run in the fifth, but a RBI double by junior left fielder Caitlyn Yates (Coeburn, Va.) and a single up the middle by Whitlow put Emory & Henry ahead 5-4.
- Sophomore right-hander Cameron Derr (Cornelius, N.C.) earned the win in relief, striking out four in three innings of work.
- Aubrey Bates suffered the loss for the Captains, allowing three earned runs on seven hits with five strikeouts.

Game Two – No. 6 Christopher Newport 3, Emory & Henry 0
- Christopher Newport got on the board with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first as Maddie Hool sent a pitch over the right field wall.
- The Captains added an insurance run in the third on a double to left-center by Bailey Roberts, 3-0.
- Emory & Henry loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the seventh, but was unable to push a run across.
- Emily Weatherholtz earned the shutout, striking out seven while allowing just four hits.
- Wasp sophomore Alex Braun (Cornelius, N.C.) took the loss, permitting three runs on five hits.

Up Next
- Emory & Henry will travel to Demorest, Georgia next weekend for four games in the Piedmont Classic, hosted by Piedmont College.
- Saturday's games against Birmingham-Southern College and Berry College will take place at Habersham Central High School in Mount Airy, Georgia at 11:00 a.m., and 4:00 p.m., respectively.
