Emory & Henry Softball Earns Doubleheader Sweep Over Roanoke, 5-4 And 4-1, Wednesday At Home

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Softball Team (9-8, 2-0 ODAC) got the Old Dominion Athletic Conference portion of its schedule underway with a doubleheaders weep of Roanoke College (10-7, 0-2 ODAC) Wednesday afternoon at home. The Wasps earned a 5-4 win in game one and completed the sweep with 4-1 victory in the nightcap.

Game One – Emory & Henry 5, Roanoke 4
The Maroons loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the first and got on the board, 1-0, with an Anna Clowdis single to left field. RC left three on base in the frame. Emory & Henry responded in the bottom of the first as sophomore first baseman Kendall Varner (Bassett, Va.) tagged a lead-off home run over the left-centerfield fence to tie the game.

Roanoke plated a pair in the second to lead, 3-1, but the Wasps took advantage of two errors in the bottom of the frame to draw the score to 3-2.

In the bottom of the sixth, E&H plated a pair on a single by senior catcher Amanda Whitlow (Riner, Va.) to take a 4-3 lead.  The Maroons responded to tie the game in the seventh as Brooke Trapuzzano scored on a wild pitch.

Emory & Henry claimed the victory in the bottom of the seventh. With one out and runners on second and third, junior Caitlyn Yates (Coeburn, Va.) laid down a bunt to squeeze senior centerfielder Erin Anderson (Aylett, Va.) in from third base for the 5-4 victory.

Sophomore right-hander Cameron Derr (Cornelius, N.C.) earned the win, striking out nine as she allowed four runs on seven hits. Olivia Simmons took the loss in relief for the Maroons, permitting one run on no hits and two walks.

Game Two – Emory & Henry 4, Roanoke 1
Emory & Henry jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a solo homer by Varner. The Wasps extended their lead to 4-0 in the fifth as junior shortstop Leanna Toler (Abingdon, Va.) tagged a three-run shot over the left field wall.

Down to their final three outs, the Maroons put two runners in scoring position with two outs. Lyndsey Riti scored on an error on a pickoff attempt which would have ended the game to make the score 4-1 but the Wasps got the final out two batters later to clinch the sweep.

E&H sophomore Alex Braun (Cornelius, N.C.) picked up her fifth win of the year, allowing just one unearned run on four hits while striking out seven. RC's Emily Salsberry suffered the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits in five innings of work.
