Emory & Henry Softball Upsets No. 15 Birmingham-Southern, 5-0, Friday In Season Opener

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The Emory & Henry College Softball Team (1-0) picked up a key NCAA Division III Atlantic Region win to open the season, knocking of No. 15 Birmingham-Southern College (0-1) by a 5-0 score Friday afternoon in the first game of the B-SC Spring Classic.

The event was moved to University Field on the campus of Jacksonville State University due to poor field conditions at Birmingham-Southern College.

How It Happened
- The Wasps got on the board in the top of the second with three runs. Sophomore right fielder Hailey Mince (Trinity, N.C.) drew a two-out bases loaded walk to set up senior shortstop Leanna Toler's (Abingdon, Va.) single up the middle which plated two more.
- Senior catcher Alex Thomas (Orlando, Fla.) gave E&H a 4-0 advantage when she drilled a one-out home run over the left field wall and the Wasps added another insurance run for the 5-0 final score in the sixth when Mince reached on an error which allowed junior second baseman Kyndall Hiatt (Ararat, Va.) to score from third base.
- Junior right-hander Cameron Derr (Cornelius, N.C.) dominated in the circle, striking out 14 while allowing just two hits as she picked up the shutout victory. Annie Clayton of B-SC suffered the loos, allowing three runs on four walks in just 1.2 innings.
