No. 17 Emory & Henry Softball Picks Up Shutout Sweep Over Shenandoah, 9-0 & 7-0, Saturday

WINCHESTER, Va. – The No. 17 Emory & Henry College Softball Team (15-3, 5-1 ODAC) kept rolling on Saturday with a pair of Old Dominion Athletic Conference wins over Shenandoah University (4-14, 1-9 ODAC). The Wasps clamed game one by a 9-0 score in five innings and completed the day with a 7-0 shutout of the Hornets.

Game One – No. 17 Emory & Henry 9, Shenandoah 0 (five innings)
Emory & Henry broke open a scoreless game in the top of the third with seven runs. Senior third baseman Allyson Steadman (Kingsport, Tenn.) drove in the first run with a triple to left field while junior centerfielder Anna Thomas (Climax, N.C.) plated two in the frame with a base hit to center.

In the fifth, the Wasps pushed the margin to 9-0 on a double to left-center by senior designated player Alex Braun (Lexington, S.C.). With Shenandoah unable to put any runs on the board in the bottom of the frame, the game was called as a 'run-rule' victory for E&H.

Wasp senior Cameron Derr (Denver, N.C.) allowed just two hits in four innings pitched while striking out five. Freshman Avery Adkins (Goodview, Va.) struck out a pair of her own, pitching the fifth inning. SU's Morgan Henley suffered the loss in relief, allowing seven runs on eight hits in 2.1 innings of work.

Game Two – No. 17 Emory & Henry 7, Shenandoah 0
After three scoreless innings to start the game, E&H junior designated player Nicole Cox (Cedar Falls, N.C.) doubled to right-centerfield to drive in junior second baseman Hailey Mince (Trinity, N.C.) for a 1-0 lead.

The Wasps' bats cooled off in the fifth and sixth before coming alive for seven hits to score six runs in the top of the seventh. Braun and freshman left fielder Kenzie Ingo (Wytheville, Va.) each had RBI doubles in the frame as Emory & Henry took a 7-0 lead. Shenandoah got just its fourth baserunner of the contest in the bottom of the seventh, but was unable to produce any further offense.

Braun grabbed the two-hit shutout, striking out nine and walking just two for her seventh win of the year. SU's Kayla Stephenson was settled with the loss, allowing three runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts in 6.1 innings.
