Alex Braun Named ODAC Softball Player Of The Week

FOREST, Va. – Emory & Henry College's Alex Braun has been named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Softball Player of the Week, ODAC officials announced Monday afternoon. It is the second time this year that Braun has earned weekly league honors.

The senior pitcher/designated player from Lexington, South Carolina led the No. 17 Wasps to a 4-0 week, batting .583 (7-for-12) with two doubles and a home run. She drove in six runs and scored four as she tallied a .643 on-base percentage and a 1.000 slugging average. She also won both of her games in complete-game fashion, striking out 18 with a 2.00 ERA.

On Thursday against Ferrum College, she went 3-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBI. She followed that up with a double in a 1-for-2 performance in the nightcap while earning a five-hit shutout with seven strikeouts.

Saturday, Braun propelled the Wasps to a doubleheader sweep of Bridgewater College. She had a hit and a run in game one and went two-for-three with four RBI, a walk, a double and a run scored. In the circle, she scattered four runs on eight hits with 11 strikeouts to pick up her 10th win of the season.

On the season, Braun leads the nation with 17 doubles and has an ODAC-leading .564 batting average with a base hit in all 24 games this year. She is also topping the conference in on-base percentage (.595), slugging (1.013) and home runs (6). She leads the league in complete games (12), is second in strikeouts (92), third in wins (10) and sixth in ERA 1.93.

Additionally, senior pitcher Cameron Derr (Denver, N.C.) was honored by the league as ODAC Softball Pitcher of the Week. It is time in program history that the Wasps have swept weekly honors from the conference office.

No. 17 Emory & Henry (21-3, 11-1 ODAC) next plays on Thursday when it resumes its doubleheader with No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan University. The games will be played starting at 3:00 p.m., on the campus of Averett University in Danville, Virginia. VWU leads 4-0 in the top of the second inning of game one.
