Emory & Henry Softball Splits Its Friday Doubleheader With Shepherd

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Softball Team (3-6) earned its third straight doubleheader split on Friday afternoon at home. The Wasps fell to the Rams of Shepherd University (1-1) by a 4-0 score to open the day and bounced back to take the nightcap by a 2-0 margin.

Game One – Shepherd 4, Emory & Henry 0
After four scoreless innings, the Rams found their way onto the board in the top of the fifth. With runners on second and third and one out, Nicole Purtell hit a three-run home run over the left field fence. Shepherd pushed its lead to 4-0 in the sixth on a two-out double by Lauren Moore.

E&H got a pair of runners on in both the sixth and seventh frames, but was unable to close the margin as SU took the opener, 4-0.

Hannah Ruffner earned the shutout win for the Rams, with a five-hit, complete game performance while striking out five. E&H freshman Abigail Street (Glade Spring, Va.) suffered the loss, allowing two earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts.

Game Two – Emory & Henry 2, Shepherd 0
Emory & Henry got things started in the bottom of the first with one out and the bases loaded, freshman shortstop Rachel Hill (Standardsville, Va.) plated sophomore centerfielder Mackenzie Williams (St. Augustine, Fla.) with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.

The Wasps threatened again in the fourth but got their second run of the contest in the fifth. Street barreled up a double off the left field wall which scored senior Emily Scaggs (Riner, Va.) from second base. E&H's defense only allowed one base runner in the final two innings as it shut the door and claimed the 2-0 victory.

Junior right-hander Avery Adkins (Goodview, Va.) grabbed the complete-game victory, shutting out the Rams with a four-hit, six-strikeout performance. Katie Laing took the loss for Shepherd, allowing two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts.

Emory & Henry will return to action on Sunday when it hosts Lees-McRae College in a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. Please be aware that this game has been postponed to from its original Saturday date due to the forecast of rain in Southwest Virginia.
