Emory & Henry Softball Goes 1-1 On The Day Against Lees-McRae Sunday At Home

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Softball Team (4-7) picked up its fourth-straight split on Sunday afternoon facing off against Lees-McRae College (9-5). The Wasps won the first game, 6-1, while the Bobcats took the nightcap by a 4-0 margin.

The contest was originally scheduled to be played on Saturday, but was pushed to Sunday due to rainy weather in Southwest Virginia on Saturday afternoon.

Game One – Emory & Henry 6, Lees-McRae 1
LMC struck first as Megan Powell hit a solo home run over the left field fence in the top of the first inning. The Wasps responded in the bottom of the frame on a two-run double down the right field line by sophomore designated player Lydia Taylor (Salem, Va.) to drive in freshmen Abigail Street (Glade Spring, Va.) and Rachel Hill (Standardsville, Va.).

In the third, junior pitcher Avery Adkins (Goodview, Va.) pushed Emory & Henry's margin to 4-1 on a two-run homer to centerfield. Adkins struck again in the fifth with a base knock through the left side, plating Street. The Wasps capped the scoring in the bottom of the sixth as sophomore centerfielder Mackenzie Williams (St. Augustine, Fla.) hit a single up the middle to drive in junior left fielder Kenzie Ingo (Wytheville, Va.).

Adkins earned the complete-game win in the circle, scattering one run on seven hits with six strikeouts and no walks. Jada Wilson took the loss, allowing six runs on six hits while striking out four and walking two.

Game Two – Lees-McRae 4, Emory & Henry 0
The Bobcats got things started in the top of the second on a two-run home run by Lauren Ritchie that cleared the left field fence. E&H had baserunners in each of the first five innings but were unable to break through.

In the top of the sixth, LMC added a run to make it 3-0 on a Powell single to left center which plated Julie Gast. The Wasps got two aboard in the bottom of the frame but again failed to convert.

Lees-McRae added a fourth run in the seventh as Powell again came through, singling up the middle to again drive in Gast for the final margin.

Powell picked up the shutout, allowing just three hits as she struck out 10. She helped her cause by going 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of RBI. Street suffered the loss in the circle, allowing three runs on four hits while walking two.

Emory & Henry will remain at home on Wednesday as part of its 12-game homestand when it hosts Tusculum University. First pitch for the South Atlantic Conference doubleheader is at 1:00 p.m.
