Emory & Henry Softball Sweeps Southwest Virginia CC, 9-0 & 9-1, In Exhibition Tuesday

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Softball Team earned a pair of exhibition wins against Southwest Virginia Community College on Tuesday afternoon at home. The Wasps took the doubleheader by scores of 9-0 and 9-1 as both games went just five innings.

It was the first time E&H played a home game since Tuesday, March 21 ending a 10-game road swing that saw the squad post a 6-4 South Atlantic Conference record.

Game One – Emory & Henry 9, Southwest Virginia CC 0 (five innings)
Emory & Henry jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first as junior catcher Morgan Silvis (Green Cove Springs, Fla.) slapped a two-run single through the left side and junior third baseman Amy Meister (Mooresville, N.C.) added a double to left-center on the next at bat.

In the second, the Wasps added four runs to extend the margin to 7-0. Freshman right fielder Katie Williams (Lafayette, Ga.) drove in a pair with a double to left center and sophomore second baseman Lydia Taylor (Salem, Va.) cleared the bases with a home run that cleared the left field fence.

Williams capped the scoring for the Wasps win the third with a base knock to center, driving in a pair.

Sophomore right-hander MaKayla Dowdy (Blacksburg, Va.) earned the complete-game shutout, scattering five hits and three strikeouts over five innings. Laci Williams suffered the loss, allowing seven runs on seven hits and two walks in two innings.

Game Two – Emory & Henry 9, Southwest Virginia CC 1 (five innings)
E&H got three runs in the first inning started by a single up the middle by freshman shortstop Rachel Hill (Stanardsville, Va.). Senior right fielder Emily Scaggs (Riner, Va.) and freshman third baseman Ashlyn Rachon (Greeneville, Tenn.) also had RBI in the frame.

After a scoreless second, the Wasps exploded for six runs in the third for a 9-0 advantage. Senior catcher Julia Street (Glade Spring, Va.) drove in two with a single up the middle and freshman outfielder Baylee Reasor (Christiansburg, Va.) drilled a two-run homer to centerfield to highlight the inning.

SWCC spoiled the shutout in the fourth as Kallista Deprimo doubled to left-center, driving in Lauren Earls who led the inning off with a base knock. The one run by the Flying Eagles was not enough to extend the contests as the Wasps completed the second run-rule win of the day, 9-1.

Sophomore Olivia Yates (Floyd, Va.) got the victory, allowing one run on three hits and a strikeout in four innings of work. Freshman Kylie Cundiff (Roanoke, Va.) closed out the game, pitching the fifth. Earls took the loss, allowing eight earned runs on eight hits in three innings.

Emory & Henry is scheduled to host Milligan University on Friday in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m., and also to conclude the SAC season on Saturday at noon against Limestone University.
