Anderson Softball Takes Two From Emory & Henry Wednesday

EMORY, Va. – The Anderson University Softball Team (13-11, 4-0 SAC) earned a pair of South Atlantic Conference wins against Emory & Henry College (9-10, 2-4 SAC) on Wednesday afternoon. The Trojans claimed game one by an 11-0 score in six innings and completed the sweep with a 12-3 victory in the nightcap.

Game One  – Anderson 11, Emory & Henry 0 (six innings)
AU got on the board in the top of the second when Maggie Nauck hit a two-run homer to left field. The Trojans extended their lead to 6-0 in the third on a grand slam by Paige Vickery.

In the sixth, Ava Worthy pushed the Anderson lead to 9-0 with a pinch-hit three-run shot to left-center. Three batters later, the Trojans got another two runs thanks to Vickery's second round-tripper of the game.

Laken Maxwell earned the shutout in the circle for AU, allowing just one hit while striking out 10 and walking three. E&H junior MaKayla Dowdy (Blacksburg, Va.) suffered the loss, allowing six runs on four hits in 2.2 innings pitched.

Game Two – Anderson 12, Emory & Henry 3
Vickery put Anderson ahead 4-0 in the top of the first with her third home run of the day. She hit another home run in the third along with Worthy as the Trojans extended the lead to 7-0.  Another run in the fourth pushed AU's lead to 8-0.

Emory & Henry got on the board in the fourth when senior catcher Morgan Silvis (Green Cove Springs, Fla.) tagged a two-run shot down the left field line to make the score 8-2.

Single runs by Anderson in the fifth and sixth got the lead back out to eight, but the Wasps struck again in the bottom half of the sixth as sophomore second baseman Abigail Street (Glade Spring, Va.) homered to left field for a 10-3 score. AU tacked on two additional insurance runs in the seventh for the final 12-3 margin.

Morgen Baker-Celis picked up the complete-game win, scattering three runs on five hits with 12 strikeouts. Wasp junior right-hander Olivia Yates (Floyd, Va.) took the loss, allowing four runs on three hits and three walks in one inning.

Emory & Henry will have a quick turnaround before its next doubleheader as it will host Bluefield State University on Thursday at 2:00 p.m.
