Carson-Newman Softball Earns SAC Sweep Over Emory & Henry, 10-2 & 10-6, Saturday

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman University Softball Team (26-16, 14-6 SAC) grabbed a pair of wins in South Atlantic Conference action against Emory & Henry College (17-18, 8-12 SAC) Saturday. The Lady Eagles won game one, 10-2, in six innings and completed the sweep with a 10-6 come-from-behind win in game two.

Game One – Carson-Newman 10, Emory & Henry 2 (six innings)
After three scoreless innings, E&H got on the board in the top of the fourth on a solo home run by senior catcher Morgan Silvis (Green Cove Springs, Fla.). The Lady Eagles responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame highlighted by a RBI double by Abbi Martin.

In the fifth, Carson-Newman extended its lead to 7-1 as Macauley Bailey and Martin each tallied a sacrifice fly. The Wasps got one run back in their half of the sixth when Silvis hit a sacrifice line drive down the right field line to plate junior Mackenzie Williams (St. Augustine, Fla.) for a 7-2 margin.

C-N ended the game in the bottom of the sixth as Bailey tallied a three-run homer to right field for the final 10-2 margin.

Emma Frost earned the win in the circle for the Lady Eagles, scattering one run on three hits with seven strikeouts over five innings. E&H sophomore Kylie Cundiff (Roanoke, Va.) took the loss, allowing five earned runs on nine hits with two strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work.

Game Two – Carson-Newman 10, Emory & Henry 6
Emory & Henry got the scoring started early with a RBI single by Silvis to drive in Williams. In the second, the Wasps pushed four across on five hits, a hit batsman and a sacrifice fly for a 5-0 lead. Williams, Silvis and sophomore second baseman Abigail Street (Glade Spring, Va.) each had RBI base knocks in the frame.

The bottom of the third saw the Lady Eagles score twice for a 5-2 contest. After a quiet fourth stanza, E&H extended its lead to 6-2 on a solo home run by sophomore shortstop Rachel Hill (Stanardsville, Va.).

Four runs in both the fifth and sixth propelled Carson-Newman ahead for the final 10-6 margin. Brooklyn Lucero highlighted the fifth with a three-run homer with Brooke Matyasovsky plating a pair with a round-tripper in the sixth.

Frost picked up her second win of the day, this time in relief as she pitched the final 5.1 innings allowing one run on two hits with eight strikeouts. Wasp freshman Destiny Good (Staunton, Va.) suffered the loss as she went the distance, allowing 10 runs on 15 hits.

Emory & Henry returns home to face No. 19 Lenoir-Rhyne University on Thursday in a SAC doubleheader that was postponed from Tuesday, April 9. First pitch between the Bears and Wasps is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
