EMORY, Va. - The Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team (1-0) picked up a 75-59 victory Tuesday evening at Bob Johnson Court over visiting Hiwassee College (2-3). The victory was the first for first-year Head Coach Rose Katz.

After the two teams battled back and forth to a 10-10 tie at the 11:12 mark of the first half, E&H went on a 9-0 run that covered the next three minutes to take a 19-10 lead. The Wasps closed the half with a 9-1 run over the last 3:02, to go in the locker room with a 34-21 lead.

E&H quickly put the contest out of reach in the second half, pushing their lead to 31 (54-23), scoring 20 of the first 22 points out of the break. Senior forward Ashlyn Baird (Boone, N.C.) had six points in the stretch.

The Wasps would keep more than a 20-point advantage until the last two minutes of the contest when Hiwassee's Britnie McDannald hit three straight three-pointers to cut into the advantage. A layup with three seconds to go by E&H freshman guard Meredith Grant (Blountville, Tenn.) settled the final score at 75-59 in favor of the home-standing Wasps.

Freshman guard Michelle Williams (Stokesdale, N.C.) led Emory & Henry with 15 points and added four assists while Baird and sophomore guard Jalan McPherson (Jonesville, Va.) had nine points apiece. The Wasps held a 59-46 advantage on the boards, 29-10 coming on the offensive glass.

Hiwassee's McDannald led all scorers with 17 points, nine coming in the last two minutes of the contest, and eight rebounds. Bethany Allen had 12 points on 6-for-12 shooting from the floor.

Emory & Henry will next take the court on Tuesday, November 22 when it travels to Hollins University to open Old Dominion Athletic Conference play.
