Roanoke Women’s Basketball Gets Past Emory & Henry, 82-68, Saturday In ODAC Play

SALEM, Va. – The Roanoke College Women's Basketball Team (1-4, 1-1 ODAC) picked up its first victory of the season, defeating Emory & Henry College (1-3, 0-3 ODAC), 82-68, In Old Dominion Athletic Conference action at the C. Homer Bast Center.

The Maroons got out to a 14-6 lead at the 14:25 mark in the first half, but a 10-2 run by the Wasps tied the contest at 16 points apiece. Roanoke would lead by as much as seven before the intermission (37-30 with 3:04 remaining) but E&H scored 10 of the last 11 points of the half to take a 40-38 advantage into the locker room.

After the break, the two teams battled back and forth as neither squad led by more than five until the 5:07 mark when Roanoke pushed its advantage to six points (67-61). The Maroons extended the margin down the stretch, hitting 10 free throws in the last two minutes of the game en route to the victory.

Roanoke was led by Paxton Gwin with 16 points and seven rebounds while Laurel Hankins and Rachel Dellahunt had 14 and 13 points, respectively. The Maroons were25-for-57 (43.9 percent) from the field with 14 assists on the day.

Sophomore guard Jalan McPherson (Jonesville, Va.) led all players with 17 points, including three three-pointers made for Emory & Henry. Freshman center Carlyta Hamm (Wytheville, Va.) registered a career-high 15 points and eight rebounds while freshman guard Kristie Langley (Staley, N.C.) also had a career day with 10 points and six boards.

The Wasps hit 10 three-pointers in the contest and held a 21-17 advantage on the offensive glass, but fouls and turnovers plagued the blue and gold in the loss.

Emory & Henry will next take the court on Friday, December 16 when it welcomes Brescia University to the King Center. Tipoff is set for 5:00 p.m.
