EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team (2-10, 1-9 ODAC) picked up its first win in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play, snapping a 10-game losing streak Saturday. The Wasps defeated the visiting WildCats of Randolph College (3-12, 0-10 ODAC) by a 71-53 score at Bob Johnson Court. The win was also special as it marked the first league win for first-year Head Coach Rose Katz.
Emory & Henry got out to an 11-6 lead early in the first half, but an 18-4 run by the WildCats gave them a 24-15 lead with 8:19 to go before the break. After a timeout by E&H, a fire was lit inside the Wasps as they went on a 19-1 tear for a 34-25 lead with eight seconds to go. Randolph's Chelsea Tyler hit a half-court three-pointer as time expired in the first half to cut the lead to 34-28.
In the second half, Emory & Henry steadily added to its lead as Randolph got no closer than four points the entire period. The Wasps led by 22 points on three separate occasions, including 60-48 (7:43) on a three-pointer by sophomore forward JoBeth Wright (Mooresville, N.C.). The WildCats were able to slightly trim the lead in the final moments of the game, scoring four of the last five points of the contest to make the final margin 71-53.
E&H was led by freshman guard Kristie Langley (Staley, N.C.) and freshman center Carlyta Hamm (Wytheville, Va.) as they both tallied double-doubles. Langley posted 15 points, 11 rebounds and three assists while Hamm tallied 15 points and pulled down 11 boards. Freshman guard Meredith Grant (Blountville, Tenn.) recorded career-highs in the game with 13 points and seven rebounds and two assists off the bench.
Randolph was paced by Courtney Bouchard with 10 points while Tyler pitched in nine of her own. Jensen Hoover had eight points and 10 rebounds on the day.
As a team, Emory & Henry shot 40.0 percent (28-for-70) for the game and ended up with a 52-34 advantage on the boards after trailing in rebounding for much of the first half. The Wasps got 24 offensive rebounds compared to just 13 for the WildCats.
E&H will remain at home on Tuesday when it will play host to Hollins University in ODAC action. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at the John Rutledge King Center.
