EMORY, Va. – The Bridgewater College Women's Basketball Team (15-10, 11-9 ODAC) picked up a 81-62 victory over Emory & Henry College (2-20, 1-19 ODAC) Saturday afternoon at the John Rutledge King Center. The contest also served as Senior Day for the Wasps, who honored seniors Ashlyn Baird (Boone, N.C.), Holli Spencer (Asheville, N.C.) and Faith Walker (Richmond, Va.) before tipoff.
Bridgewater got out to a 9-3 lead over E&H, but the Wasps were able to tie the contest at 15 points apiece with 13:18 on the clock. The score would be knotted twice more in the first half before the Eagles pushed the advantage to eight (40-32) at the half.
After the break, Emory & Henry started the half with a 9-2 run to cut Bridgewater's lead to one (42-41). An 11-2 scoring spurt by the Eagles covering 4:24 put them back up by nine points, a lead that they would extend to 15 with 5:41 remaining in the contest (70-55). The Wasps were able to trim the deficit to 10 (72-62) on a three-pointer by freshman guard Valerie Beale (Greensboro, N.C.) with 3:10 left, but Bridgewater scored the final nine points of the contest to seal the victory.
Baird recorded a game- and season-high 20 points in the contest, including 18 in the first half. Walker tallied seven rebounds, five assists and four steals while Spencer had two points and assist and a block in the contest.
E&H freshman guard Kristie Langley (Staley, N.C.) had 14 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double and Beale finished the game with nine points and five assists.
Bridgewater had four players reach double figures in points, led by Shannan Thorne with 18 points and 13 rebounds to complete the double-double. Jenny Logan registered 16 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals while Holly Morgan had 16 points of her own. Katelynn Hottinger had 13 points and eight boards as well for the Eagles.
As a team, Bridgewater shot 42.1 percent (24-for-57) for the game and hit 33-of-44 (75 percent) of its free throws. The Eagles also held a 50-42 advantage on the boards.
Emory & Henry completes the 2011-12 season with a 2-20 record. The Wasps finish tied for 10th place in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference with a 1-19 mark in league games.
